How to Analyse a CAT Mock Test (Step-by-Step Guide)
Learn how to analyse CAT mock tests using section-wise analytics, accuracy breakdowns, and topic-level weakness mapping to improve your percentile.
Why mock analysis matters more than the mock itself
Most CAT aspirants attempt 30+ mocks but only analyse a handful — and that's exactly why their percentile stalls. Your mock score is just the symptom. The real prep happens in the 60 to 90 minutes you spend dissecting why each question was right, wrong, or skipped.
Step 1 — Read the section-wise summary first
Open your IIMPossible result page and look at the VARC, DILR, and QA blocks separately. For each section note attempts, accuracy, and time spent. A 70% accuracy at 12 attempts is very different from 70% at 22 attempts.
Step 2 — Classify every question into four buckets
- Correct & fast — your strengths. Keep them.
- Correct & slow — leaked time. Find a faster method.
- Incorrect — concept gap or silly mistake? Tag it.
- Skipped — solvable on a retry, or genuinely too hard?
Step 3 — Use the topic-level weakness map
IIMPossible tags every question with a topic (Algebra, Para-jumbles, Set Theory, etc.). Sort your incorrect + skipped questions by topic — the topics that repeat across 3+ mocks are your real weaknesses. Spend the next week revising those before attempting the next mock.
Step 4 — Compare attempt strategy with the toppers
Look at the percentile predictor and check what attempts/accuracy the 99+ %ilers had on the same mock. If they attempted 24 in QA at 85% and you attempted 18 at 88%, you have an attempt-volume problem, not an accuracy problem.
Step 5 — Re-attempt the mock cold after 7 days
A week later, attempt the same mock again — only the questions you skipped or got wrong. If your accuracy on that subset isn't above 80%, your analysis didn't stick. Repeat Step 3 on the remaining failures.
A simple weekly rhythm
Take one full mock, spend the next day analysing it, then two days fixing the weakest topic from the weakness map. Repeat. This rhythm converts mock-takers into 99+ %ilers.
